David Lewis Schaefer is Professor of Political Science at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, where he teaches courses on the history of political philosophy and American political thought. He received his B.A. with honors from Cornell University and his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago. A three-time recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, he has also been awarded research grants from numerous other foundations.
Dr. Schaefer’s most important authored books are The Political Philosophy of Montaigne (Cornell University Press, 1990; reprinted 2019) and Illiberal Justice: John Rawls vs. the American Political Tradition (University of Missouri Press, 2007). Among the books he edited or co-edited, along with being a contributor, are The New Egalitarianism: Questions and Challenges (1979), Sir Henry Taylor’s “The Statesman” (1992); The Future of Cities (1996); Freedom over Servitude: Montaigne, La Boétie, and “Of Voluntary Servitude” (1998); Active Duty: Public Administration as Democratic Statesmanship (1998), and Democratic Decision-Making: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives (2012).
Besides having published many articles and reviews in scholarly journals, Dr. Schaefer is the author of op-ed columns that have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, and Worcester Telegram and Gazette. He has also contributed essays dealing with current affairs to such websites as Law and Liberty, National Review Online, and RealClearPolicy.
A career-long champion of academic freedom and objectivity and foe of so-called political correctness, Dr. Schaefer is a longtime and proud member of the National Association of Scholars.
