The Ideology of Anti-Poetry

A recent collection of essays on the nature and function of poetry gives a clear-sighted critique of the failures of contemporary poetry.
Although they are often attacked as being ahistorical or obsolete, New Critical methods of interpreting literature can help students become better readers who see the value in literature, ambiguity, and the search for meaning.
Free verse does not simply express a “debased” yearning for freedom from tradition. Like earlier forms of metered poetry, it too expresses the trials of confining human thought to written language.
Not everything need be seen as ideological.
An appreciation for the naturalness of form can lead us back from the politicization of poetry.
