Byron Johnson is Director of Program in Religion and Civil Society at the Witherspoon Institute and professor of sociology and Director of the Institute for Studies of Religion at Baylor University. He has published extensively on the role of religion in addressing social problems like crime and delinquency, substance abuse, offender rehabilitation, and prisoner reentry. He is Co-Principal Investigator of the Religion and Relationships in Urban America study, a collaborative study of the Fragile Families Survey at Princeton University. He is recognized as a leading authority on the scientific study of religion, the efficacy of faith-based organizations, domestic violence, and criminal justice. Professor Johnson previously directed research centers at Vanderbilt University and the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a Ph.D. in criminology from Florida State University.
