PUBLIC DISCOURSE: John Haldane

John Haldane is a Professor in the Department of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, where he is also the Director of the Centre for Ethics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs. His research interests include central issues in philosophy of mind; the history of philosophy; theoretical and normative issues in social and political philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics; and artistic, educational, and theological issues approached through the methods of those disciplines rather than through philosophy. Haldane has received numerous awards and grants, as well as fellowships from the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Pittsburgh. He currently has three forthcoming books under contract: Truth, Meaning, and Completion, Reasonable Faith, and An Intelligent Persons Guide to British Art. Haldane has served as an editor of several academic journals and has also written numerous articles for such journals. Prior to his career in academic philosophy he studied and taught art, and he continues to contribute to the study of art and art history. Haldane completed both his bachelors degree (1980) and his doctorate (1984) in philosophy at the University of London.
